What Is Burns management

Burns management refers to the immediate and ongoing medical care provided to individuals who suffer from burns, which can range from minor to life-threatening injuries. Burns are classified into degrees—first-degree (superficial), second-degree (partial-thickness), and third-degree (full-thickness)—based on the depth and severity of tissue damage. The primary goals of burns management are to reduce pain, prevent infection, promote healing, and minimize scarring or complications. Initial first aid typically includes cooling the burn with running water (not ice), protecting the area with a clean cloth or dressing, and avoiding the use of ointments or home remedies without medical advice. For more serious burns, especially those involving large surface areas, the face, hands, feet, or genitals, prompt medical attention is crucial. Hospital treatment may involve fluid resuscitation, wound cleaning, specialized dressings, antibiotics, pain control, and sometimes surgical procedures like debridement (removal of dead tissue) or skin grafting. In severe cases, burns management may also include physical therapy and psychological support to aid in recovery. Early intervention and proper care are essential for reducing long-term damage and improving functional and cosmetic outcomes in burn patients.

First Aid for Burns

Cool the burn with clean, running water (not ice) for at least 10–15 minutes.
Remove tight clothing or jewelry near the burn site, but do not peel off anything stuck to the skin.
Cover the area with a sterile, non-stick bandage or clean cloth.
Avoid applying butter, oil, or home remedies.
Seek medical help for deep, large, or facial burns, or if the person is a child or elderly.
